Nicki Minaj: Makes History With Anaconda
While many counted her out and thought she had been replaced as Queen of Rap – the star has come back fighting. Minaj, has managed to swoop in and rule late summer.
Minaj, has garnered three Top 40 hits in the past three months.
Not even three months ago, Minaj released the ever so pleasant ‘Pills N Potions‘. And, in this short time span the single managed to sell 500,000 digital copies – reaching a Gold certification. Eventually, peaking at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Soon after, she released a joint single with Jessie J and Ariana Grande called ‘Bang Bang‘. That track managed to sell 230,000 copies in its first week – reaching a peak of number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. And in just two weeks, the track has managed to sell over 371,000 copies.
‘Bang Bang‘ marked Minaj‘s 10th Billboard top 10 hit. Becoming the only female rapper in history to have over 9 songs make it into the top 10.
Last week, Minaj broke two other records. With the release of her new single ‘Anaconda‘ Minaj managed to become the only female rapper to top the iTunes chart as a SOLO act (without a featured artist). Not only that, Minaj became the first female rapper to occupy both the #1 and #2 position on iTunes with ‘Bang Bang‘ being the latter.
‘Anaconda‘ made it’s impact on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, debuting at number 19. The single was the 3rd best selling single this week, with sales of 141,000. Almost doubling the debut of her lead single “Pills N Potions” which sold 85,000 copies in its first week. ‘Anaconda‘ also became Minaj’s 20th top 20 hit.
Overall, the song has become Minaj‘s 51st Hot 100 entry, extending her mark for the most among female rappers (Missy Elliott is next with 31) and tying her with Eminem for the seventh-best total among all rappers; Lil Wayne leads the category with 122. Among all artists, Minaj breaks out of a tie with Michael Jackson and also equals Rod Stewart‘s 51 career Hot 100 entries.
